The Matchstick Prize

Causewave Community Partners, The Credit Union Collective (Reliant, The Summit and Pittsford Federal Credit Unions) and News 8 WROC TV are partnering on a unique prize for local nonprofits, recognizing the organizations that spark change in our community. The Matchstick Prize will go to a small nonprofit organization that has demonstrated results in achieving meaningful community change in Greater Rochester.

This is the seventh year that the Matchstick Prize is being awarded to a local nonprofit. The winner of the Matchstick Prize will receive a cash prize of $5,000 from The Credit Union Collective, along with donated media space from the News 8 WROC— a total value of $20,000! Consultation and details on the media will be provided to the winner post-prize announcement. New this year: four finalists will also be selected to receive a 30-second promotional video, produced by sponsor News 8 WROC TV. These videos will be important resources that will help these nonprofits tell their story to those they serve and those who support them.

Small, local nonprofits are so important to so many in our community. They’re often providing critical support and filling gaps in services to underserved populations – and the urgency of their work is needed even more now, in the era of COVID-19. Nonprofits, like many of us, have been hit hard financially, whether they provide direct services or not. We are proud to be able to expand the Matchstick Prize this year to support nonprofits as they support our community.
— Todd Butler, Causewave President & CEO

We know that a strong nonprofit sector makes our community stronger. That’s why Causewave, The Credit Union Collective, the Rochester Area Community Foundation and News 8 WROC TV are committed to supporting the “small giants” of Greater Rochester during this especially critical time. This year, the partners are taking special steps to support small local nonprofits in our community that are endeavoring to invest in capacity building, improve an existing program, or launch a new initiative. The nomination process has been streamlined, recognizing the time demands being placed on small nonprofits. Nonprofits are encouraged to leverage the support of key volunteers – such as board or committee members – to complete the brief online nomination.
